Wireless LAN for the Government Sector

Security must be the top priority for the government wireless LAN sector. Security requirements are defined in the FIPS 140-2 standard. The Wi-Fi Alliance implementation of IEEE 802.11i is WPA2 with AES encryption and this meets the requirements of FIPS 140-2. WLAN mobility is also a very important feature for the government sector. There can be big savings in greatly reducing the number of CAT5 network-drops to get everyone connected. New facilities can be quickly setup. Offices and cubicles can be moved around and rapidly reconfigured.

Security issues:

Wireless LAN security implemented with WPA2 and AES encryption along with a RADIUS server for authentication meets the FIPS 140-2 requirements. Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems detect and shutdown rogue access points. Security monitoring is a must-have in the government sector.
